Restaurant Indulgences
By Candice Brearley
My mother didn’t cook at all. But, luckily, she married my father, who was a cook. He would prepare whatever she wanted, whenever. “What do you feel like, Lillian?”, he would ask her every day. My father was fabulous in the kitchen. He specialized in Hungarian cuisine. My maternal grandmother was also a very good cook. Thank God!
When I married, my husband, Purvis, asked me if I cooked. “Only scrambled eggs and popcorn”, was my answer. “Together?”, he asked. I said, "No", and he said, "Good"! Now, people say I am an excellent cook. My father helped me set up my kitchen and taught me many of his favorite dishes, especially the Hungarian delights. Now I have a vast recipe repertoire, including Chinese and Japanese. Eventually, Purvis commented, “I used to have to go out to have a good meal; now I have to dine in to eat well!”.
As an artist and fashion designer, I have traveled all over the world and have eaten in many of the finest restaurants: Hong Kong, South of France, India, Mexico City, in fact, all over Europe and Asia. Moreover, living in New Jersey offers a wide variety of good restaurants, as many of you already know!
In this space, I will provide all of you with my take on the local gems that I really enjoy, including Bucks County, Trenton, Hamilton, Princeton and the surrounding areas. Occasionally, I will reminisce about the great places that, sadly, no longer exist, especially in and around Chambersburg (formerly an Italian section of Trenton). I will even add a few feasting jewels from around the world. Rest assured, I will only include exceptional places to dine!
